Online Case Management Education, Training and Certification Programs

Case management training programs provide nurses and other healthcare professionals with the skills to assess and monitor the quality of patient care in hospitals and other medical facilities. Online education enables healthcare professionals to expand their career options by completing coursework outside of a traditional classroom environment.

Program Prerequisites

Case management program applicants typically must hold a registered nurse (RN) or other heatlchare professional licensure as well as possess practical work experience. Many programs also require a baccalaureate degree.

Technical Requirements

Each school provides a list of unique technical requirements but students should possess basic PC skills, hardware, software and Internet access. Some case management training programs include real-time interaction, so speakers and a headset or microphone may also be required.

Medical Case Management Certificate Program

Online programs are available at the undergraduate and graduate level. Most certificate programs are designed to be completed in one year but this time frame may be extended.

Training is designed to cultivate core competencies associated with assessing and monitoring patient care as well as facilitating the interaction between the patient, family and healthcare professionals. Students may complete the following coursework as part of their case management program.

This class is designed to enhance communication skills by analyzing the communication process. Communication's role in promoting cohesive working relationships is also explored.

Leadership and Management

The role that leadership and management play in a healthcare environment is explored. Students study management theories as well as strategies for managing organizational resources.

Business Skills in Health Care

This class is designed to provide students with a well rounded understanding of management concepts. Information technology, strategic planning and resource management are just a few topics explored.

Effective Case Management: Connecting to the Community

Current and historical case management concepts and techniques, including the role of technology and service evaluation, are analyzed in this course.

Effective Case Management: Connecting to Health Care Systems

The focus of this class is managing customer services in settings that include hospital and community-based practices. Financial responsibility and insurance related issues are also addressed.

Introduction to Life Care Planning (LCP)

Collaboration strategies, effective reporting principles and medical record review techniques are a central focus of this course of study.
