How Much Do Online Criminal Justice Degrees Cost?

The cost of online criminal justice degrees varies by the degree being sought and the type of school. Some schools have different tuition rates for students living in the same state than those that live out-of-state. Additional costs and application fees vary as well.

Online Criminal Justice Degrees Cost Comparison

Degree Level

The criminal justice degree being sought has a large impact on the tuition of the program. Associate degrees at community colleges are less expensive than higher-level degrees offered at universities. Tuition rates per credit increase significantly for students seeking a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, usually around $200 per credit. Master's degree programs average closer to $400 per credit.
Although individual credit hours in a bachelor's degree program in criminal justice may cost less than a master's degree, the overall tuition for an undergraduatemay be more expensive due to the number of credit hours required to complete the program. Bachelor's programs generally demand about 180 credit hours while master's programs require only about 48 credit hours. Tuition for a bachelor's degree may be decreased by completing general education and elective credits at a less expensive community college.

Residency

Some schools may charge a different rate for out-of-state online criminal justice students. Generally, this rate is higher than the tuition paid by students who live in-state. The difference in tuition for state residents versus out-of-state students can range from $10-$100 or more per credit for undergraduate programs. Graduate degree programs can add up to $600 per credit for out-of-state students. In some instances, distance learning education may be less expensive, regardless of a student's location.

Additional Fees

Schools offering online criminal justice programs may also tack on additional fees. These fees may include application fees, distance learning fees, textbook charges and shipping fees. Application fees are generally $45-50, but may be waived for distance learners of certain programs or schools. Some schools charge distance learning fees upwards of $35 per credit hour. Books with shipping costs can range up to $350, though this cost can be decreased by purchasing used books or utilizing online course materials when available.

Private vs. Public Schools

Private schools are often more expensive than public schools. However, the difference in tuition is hard to pinpoint. For example, tuition for a private school with no fluctuation for out-of-state students may be significantly less than a public school that increases costs for non-residents. Also, a less prestigious private school may have lower tuition rates than a more popular, highly-rated public university.
