Online Biomedical Training: Summary of Distance Learning Programs

For those who wish to work in the medical field but do not care to be a doctor or surgeon, a biomedical degree or certificate provides opportunities to help patients. Two paths of study can be chosen for a biomedical program, biomedical engineering or biomedical informatics. There are colleges that supply both biomedical programs online.

Biomedical Engineering

Combining the use of hands and minds is the focus of this program. Students who study biomedical engineering create and repair medical equipment. Students can expect to take classes in biology, electronics, math, medicine and physics.

Certificates

Through the instruction of online study, many certificates are available. Some colleges offer certificates to emergency personnel that are looking to prepare for pandemics and possible terrorist attacks. Other colleges offer certificates that are more common for the biomedical engineering program.

Sample Certificate Courses for Biomedical Engineering

  • Agroterrorism
  • Biosenseors
  • Pandemics

Undergraduate Degrees for Biomedical Engineering

Many colleges offer some online courses towards degrees, however full degrees in biomedical engineering are uncommon. Students may work toward associate and bachelor's degrees online but often find remaining on-campus courses complete the degree.

Sample Undergraduate Courses for Biomedical Engineering

  • Tissue Engineering
  • Medical Electronics
  • Human Biology

Graduate Degrees for Biomedical Engineering

Advanced degrees are more common for online study. Students may earn their Master's degrees and PhDs through the study of online courses. Sometimes classroom discussions and classes are mandatory. Often on-campus courses are available on nights and weekends to provide flexibility to those who work and want to advance in their career or degree.

Sample Graduate Courses for Biomedical Engineering

  • Protein Engineering
  • Biomaterials
  • Bioengineering

Biomedical Informatics

Through the use of data students can work with medical fields to further research and technology. Students of biomedical informatics connect hospitals with physicians and provide knowledge to teach and research in medical institutions. Medical personnel uses biomedical informatics to turn medical information into IT data available throughout the healthcare world.
Students can find certificates, master's degrees and PhDs online for biomedical informatics through many reputable and accredited institutions. Like biomedical engineering, programs often require some traditional classes. However, there are colleges that not only offer online courses but also provide distance learning opportunities through off campus campuses. Students who enjoy classroom settings but cannot find a degree in biomedical informatics at their local colleges may consider such opportunities.

Sample Courses for Biomedical Informatics

  • Ontology
  • Biomedical Systems
  • Information Security
  • Biostatistics
  • Clinical Systems
