Online Creative Writing Education Programs and Training Options

Students interested in developing their creative writing skills have a variety of online education options open to them. Classes related to creative writing can be found in formal degree or certificate programs.

Online Creative Writing Education Program and Training Options

Online education programs in creative writing can be found at the bachelor's and master's degree levels. Subject areas can vary, too; while online programs and training options dedicated to creative writing can be hard to find, programs in English or those that combine English and creative writing may be more common. These programs go in to the depths of the English language, as well as examining different literary forms, like short stories, novels, and poems. Additionally, some programs may cover writing for theater and cinema.
While online course offerings can vary significantly from program to program, many degree or certificate programs offer courses in creative writing theory and practice. Common topics studied are poetry, short stories, literary theory, and literary history. Some programs may even offer coursework related to teaching creative writing.

Residency Requirement

While some degree programs in creative writing can be completed 100% online, others may have some on-campus or residency requirements. These in-person requirements may come before, during, or after the formal start and end date of the semester or program, and they may include attendance at seminars, workshops, lectures, or panel discussions. Graduate students may be required to present their work at a residency session.

Online Learning Methods

Students enrolled in online or distance learning creative writing programs may participate in online conferences or courses. A significant amount of independent work in the form of annotated readings or paper assignments may be required. A minimum of technological literacy may also be required, since course materials and assignments may also be exchanged electronically via an online course management system. Online chat among students and between students and their teachers may be possible, or even required, in some cases.

Technical Requirements

Online learners may need to meet specialized technical requirements in order to complete the program. Oftentimes, a minimum amount of computer memory, plus certain computer operating systems and office software programs, are required. Students may also need to have a CD-ROM drive or network card that meets certain standards. In some cases, specialized software programs may be required to access certain course materials.
