People who earn an online certificate in drafting are qualified for entry-level positions as drafters with government agencies or construction, manufacturing, engineering and architectural firms. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), many companies may prefer job applicants who have had postsecondary training in drafting at a community college, technical institute, or a 4-year college or university (www.bls.gov).The BLS also reported that employment of drafters will increase by four percent over the years 2008-2018. Employment of drafters in architectural and engineering fields is projected to increase by nine percent during that same period, while mechanical and electrical drafters should see little or no change.
As of May 2009, the median annual wages of architectural and civil engineering drafters were $45,600, according to BLS data. The median annual wages for mechanical drafters were $47,790 and for electrical and electronic drafters the median annual wages were $52,080.
