Online Forensic Accounting Training Information

Online training programs in forensic accounting may be available at the undergraduate or graduate levels and through certificate or degree programs. Where forensic accounting programs aren't available, students may be able to pursue accounting programs with forensic accounting concentrations.

Undergraduate-level Training

Students can enroll in an online 2-year Associate of Science or 4-year Bachelor of Science degree in accounting with a forensic accounting track. Some undergraduate certificate programs may also be offered, although this is less common. The curriculum generally includes basic accounting and forensic accounting principles, auditing procedures, fraud detection, fraud prevention, interviewing skills and criminal law as it relates to accounting. There may also be an emphasis on using technology in the field and computer investigations.

Graduate-level Training

Working accountants seeking forensic accounting training can earn a certificate in forensic accounting or master's degree in accounting with a forensic accounting specialization. Students will typically build upon their existing accounting knowledge and learn more in-depth skills related to opening, conducting and reporting on forensic accounting investigations. Case studies and data analysis may be part of the program. Topics such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 may also be discussed, along with utilizing technology to perform forensic accounting activities.
Some programs require a short-term residency, where a limited number of on-campus visits are required for a few days at a time. In that case, students meet cohort learners and participate in in-person learning with experienced professionals. Some graduate-level programs also offer continuing education units.

General Program Characteristics

Prerequisites

For students without previous relevant academic coursework in accounting, there may be some preliminary coursework that needs to be completed first. Prerequisite course topics can include principles of accounting and accounting systems.

Computer Competency

Students who enroll in an online program in forensic accounting, in addition to having a minimum standard of accounting knowledge, are expected to have a minimum level of computer competency. Many schools that offer online programs expect that students are comfortable using software programs like Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, plus the ability to send and receive email and attachments, upload and download files, make discussion board posts and chat online with fellow learners.

Course Delivery

In general, course materials are exchanged through an online course management system. Tests may also be given through this interface. Learning is frequently asynchronous, although there are often a few firm dates for beginning and ending the course. Course materials may remain available on the course management system for the duration of the class.

Technical Requirements

Many programs specify minimum computer hardware and software requirements for online learners. Students may need access to a computer with certain processor speed, operating system, RAM, hard drive size or high-speed Internet to fully access all course materials and learning activities.
