An online degree program in radio
communications prepares students to enter the field as broadcasters,
writers and directors. Programs usually cover mass communications
involving radio, television, cable, the Internet, film and multimedia.

Online Bachelor's Degrees in Radio Communications
Those interested in enrolling in an online radio communications
program can find educational opportunities at the bachelor's degree
level. In addition to learning about radio communications, other areas
of focus include business, print media, public relations and all
electronic media.
Online programs offer the same advantages of a traditional bachelor's
degree program, including experienced faculty and innovative curriculum
to educate in the area of communications. These programs offer
flexibility in scheduling and can be completed in as little as four
years of full-time study. Those who have an associate's degree can
complete a program in two years.
Some schools allow students to access web-based coursework a week
before the starting date of the course to learn how to navigate the
virtual learning system. Students must have access to an Internet
Service Provider (ISP) and personal computer to participate in online
degree programs.
Common Courses in an Online Bachelor's Degree in Radio Communications Program
Both
radio broadcasting
and general communication classes are a heavy concentration of these
online bachelor's degree programs. Students study all areas of
communication and learn to apply them to their career.
Communication Foundations Course
This course introduces communications as a systematic science, field
of study, liberal art and human activity. The course also focuses on
communication theory application. Students study cultural,
interpersonal, public, organizational and small group communication.
Instructors may require students to participate in online discussions
and communicate with classmates through message boards, chat rooms and
discussion forums.
In this class, students research the role of mass communications and
its affect on society. Some topics of concentration include educational
programming, advertising and journalism. Instructors may educate
students through online streaming or previous recorded lectures on DVD.
Public Speaking Course
Lessons in this class include fundamental principles, processes and
attributes of effective public speaking. The course also focuses on
skills in gathering, organizing and developing materials, effective
speaking and listening, various presentation techniques and audience
adaptation. Students may be required to purchase a mic and recording
software for their computer and upload recordings for instructors to
listen and evaluate.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that radio operators earned a median wage of $37,120 in May 2008 (
www.bls.gov). Through 2018, employment as technicians in broadcasting is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations.
Although radio broadcasting is usually an entry-level position not
requiring any formal education, certification and continuing education
opportunities are available. One option is certification through the
Society of Broadcast Engineers, which requires successful passing of an
examination and may lead to advancement in the field.
