Few institutions offer online classes solely for technical support training. However, information technology (IT) programs provide relevant training in the use and support of business-related computer systems and data communication networks, and businesses often have online technical support training classes for their specific software applications and hardware.

Overview of Technical Support Courses

Online information technology classes are usually part of programs leading to an associate or bachelor's degree in information technology. These classes may also lead to an advanced credential such as a master's degree in career and technical education. Diploma programs for PC support specialists are available from some schools and businesses. Students may also take online IT classes to complete programs that lead to a professional certification, such as the Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician.

General Requirements for Online Courses

Even though some classes begin with the fundamentals, others require prior knowledge of one or more programming languages, computer hardware, software programs and operating systems. Computers may need to have an updated browser, DVD player, microphone, headphones and word processor. QuickTime and Adobe Reader software may also be necessary. Students learn to support security on specific platforms and applications, such as Windows and Linux. Responses to hacker threats, malware, system intrusion and ethics are also addressed.

Students in this course build on their technical knowledge by learning active listening, critical analysis and problem-solving skills. The course also teaches students effective oral and written communication skills by stressing grammar, presentation, syntax and vocabulary.
