Top Online Architecture Schools and Colleges: School List

Online Master of Architecture programs are usually designed for students who already have undergraduate degrees in architecture or some professional work experience. Most of these distance-learning programs combine online courses with classes on-campus at the college or university.

Top Online Master of Architecture Degree Programs

1. Lawrence Technological University

Lawrence Tech is a private university located outside of Detroit in Southfield, MI. It was ranked 47th among universities awarding master's degree in the Midwest region by U.S. News & World Report in 2010 and was named one of the best Midwestern colleges by the Princeton Review in 2010. The College of Architecture and Design, established in 1962, offers degree programs in architecture, design and management.
The NAAB-accredited online M.Arch program, which is open to students who have a bachelor's degree in architecture or architectural studies, has a concentration in design and practice. The required 36 credit hours include online courses and a master class studio. Led by a practicing architecture firm, this studio may be taken at Lawrence Tech during a ten-week summer session or throughout four weekends plus a field trip with the instructing firm. A 57-credit hour combined M.Arch and Master of Business (MBA) program is also available through online courses plus the master class studio.

2. Boston Architectural College

The Boston Architectural College (BAC) was established in 1889 as a club for architectural professionals. Evening drafting classes at the club evolved into a fully accredited college, which now offers bachelor's, master's and certificate programs in architecture, interior design, computer modeling and historic preservation. With strong ties to the professional community, the BAC encourages students to earn credit hours by working for a practicing firm.
A 5-semester or 2-year distance Master of Architecture (M.Arch) program is offered by the college. Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree in an architecture-related field and have worked for one year under a licensed architect. Students take online classes while continuing their architectural employment, which also counts for some credit hours. In addition, students must complete a 1-week intensive session in Boston once each semester. BAC's distance M.Arch program is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB).
