Online Barber Courses, Classes and Training Programs

Barber training programs usually must be completed in person, since students need hands-on practice in cutting, trimming, styling and shaving hair and facial hair. However, online and hybrid courses and classes are also available to help working barbers fulfill their continuing education (CE) requirements. Completion of a certain number of CE hours is typically necessary for maintaining an active barber license.

Overview of Barber Training and Online Courses

Barber courses and classes are offered at many vocational schools and colleges as part of their distance-learning and online programs. Online barber courses are usually taken individually for continuing education fulfillment, although some on-campus barber training programs may allow students to complete a few credits online.
An on-campus barber training program provides students with the skills and knowledge to specialize in hair cutting and styling, shaving, perming and waving. To expand their education and enhance career opportunities, many students pursue a certificate or associate degree in cosmetology. Job options include employment as a cosmetologist, barber, hair stylist, cosmetology instructor or owner of a barbershop or salon.
Upon completion of an on-campus barber training program, graduates must pass a state licensing exam to work as professional barbers. Keeping this license current usually involves completing a specified number of continuing education hours. CE courses are commonly offered online to suit the schedules of barbers working full-time.

Online Requirements

Although the main requirement for online barber courses is a computer with Internet (preferably high-speed or broadband) access, courses may require computers to meet minimum standards to support delivery methods such as Blackboard. The basic requirements for computers are a current operating system and a compatible, up-to-date Web browser; students may also need headphones and speakers to access courses with audio materials.
Computers should have software for playing media, word processing and viewing a variety of file types (such as PDFs). Students must have an e-mail address for correspondence with instructors.
